Google Quantum Breakthrough Poses Threat to Bitcoin Security

Google has published a scientific paper that has already raised concerns among crypto enthusiasts. Researchers from Google's quantum division stated that cracking RSA encryption, which underpins the security of banking systems and crypto wallets, could require 20 times fewer resources than previously thought. Craig Gidney, a researcher from Google Quantum, mentioned that transitioning to quantum-resistant cryptosystems needs a clear understanding of quantum attack costs. In 2019, it was estimated that factoring a 2048-bit RSA number would need 20 million noisy qubits and about eight hours, but now this threshold might be reduced to under a million qubits and under a week of computation.
